In questions pertaining to salvation, our authority must be the Word of God found in His Holy Book, the Bible. It has always been true, "The way of man is not in himself; it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps" (Jeremiah 10:23). Man is not capable of charting his own course in religious matters -- he must turn to God's Word. The wise man Solomon wrote, "There is a way which seemeth right unto a man; But the end thereof are the ways of death" (Proverbs 14:12; Proverbs 12:15). The man who insists on guiding himself will convince himself that he is right. Jesus stated, "Sanctify them in the truth; thy word is truth" (John 17:17). Peter wrote, "Seeing that His divine power has granted us everything pertaining to life and godliness" (II Peter 1:3). We are admonished not to add to or take from the Word of God (Revelation 22:18 & 19). Therefore when it comes to the Plan of Salvation, God's Word is our full and complete authority. It is by that Word we must live and by that Word we will be judged.
As we study on God's plan of salvation, let us remember that God did not put all of his teaching on salvation in one passage of scripture. We must accept by faith all that is written on this subject.
The most important decision you will make in this life is to obey the Gospel. Paul, writing in II Thessalonians 1:8 said, "Dealing out retribution to those who do not know God and to those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus". The Gospel is good news for mankind. Paul tells us what the Gospel is in I Corinthians 15:1-4
In the plan of salvation, FAITH We are saved by faith (Romans 1:16). Here Paul tells us, "He is not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek". Jesus tells us we must believe in Him as the Son of God or we will die in our sins. This is where we begin our journey to salvation. We cannot stop here for James tells us, "the demons also believe and shudder" (James 2:19). James also says, "For a man is justified by works, and not by faith alone" (James 2:24). Faith that does not include OBEDIENCE does not save us. As an alien sinner we must "REPENT of our sins" (Luke 13:3; Acts 2:38; Act 17:30). Paul writes to tell us, "For the sorrow that is according to the will of God produces a repentance without regret..." (II Corinthians 7:30). Repentance includes one who stops that sin as he turns to God in obedience. Now one is ready to CONFESS HIS FAITH IN JESUS CHRIST as the Son of God. (Matthew 10:32 & 33; Romans 10:9-10; Acts 8:35-37).
BAPTISM FOR THE REMISSION OF OUR SINS is that which puts us into Christ. Acts 2:38 says "And Peter said unto them, repent, and let each of your be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit".
Romans 6:3-4 - "Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Jesus Christ have been baptized into His death? Therefore, we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, in order that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life".
Galatians 3:26-27 - "For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ".
I Peter 3:21 - "And corresponding to that, baptism now saves you -- not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience -- through the resurrection of Jesus Christ".
Please note these truths:
1. We are saved by the death of Christ and we are baptized into His death.
2. We are cleansed by His blood which was shed in His death, and we are baptized Into His death.
3. Our new life in Christ begins at baptism.
4. We are united with Christ when we are baptized.
If we believe Jesus and love Him, we will do what He says. That not only includes being baptized for the remission of our sins but doing anything else He tells us.
Please remember the Bible is our guide in living the Christian life. (I Peter 4:11; John 12:48; II Timothy 3:16 & 17). The Church of our Lord was purchased with the blood of Jesus Christ (Acts 20:28).
